Full Stack Developer

Engineering / Chester, UK

The Company

Bikmo is an adventure sports technology company, with a simple mission to provide exceptional services that enable our customers to spend more time exploring the great outdoors.

Focussing initially on insurance in the cycling sector, we operate in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Austria and by utilising sector expertise, technology, a love for the sport and an open approach to data, we've won customers, partners, awards and 5-star reviews. We count the likes of British Cycling, Deliveroo, Brompton and Pure Electric amongst our partners. Our vision is to become as synonymous for what we do in adventure sports as GoPro for Cameras, Oakley for eyewear or Strava for tracking.

We are proud to be a BCorp and have clear social and environmental goals that align with our mission as a business. Our team is our most important asset and we invest into and reward our people to help grow and maintain an exceptional culture.

This is an exciting opportunity for a technically excellent and self-starting full stack problem solver to join our team in developing the platform that will enable us to achieve our ambition. Rapid application development allows us to adapt to our customers' needs and stay one step ahead of the competition, so we're looking for an applicant with an agile and adaptive mind, able to spot a problem and formulate a solution.

Sector experience is not required - we're looking for team members who will challenge previously held views of how insurance companies operate, in favour of utilising technology to provide an exceptional experience to our customers.

The Role

Reporting to the CTO and working within the engineering team, the role requirements include;

Tech requirements Back end In our back-end work, we follow PHP-FIG standards wherever they apply. We check our code for 'mess' and standards before sharing with remote repos and other projects. We use the git-flow branching strategy, and code review via pull-request.

All our active projects use PHP 7+ so experience of using this is a must. In addition, we use PHP-fig standards 1, 2, 7, 11, 15 and 17 extensively. If you’re not familiar with these standards, take a look at https://www.php-fig.org/.

For testing our code we use the Codeception framework. This is based on PHPUnit so if you have experience with this then you’ll be able to use Codeception.

When committing to Git, we use the git-flow branching strategy so work is always created on a feature branch before being pull-requested onto develop.
Front End In our front-end work, we build templates in Twig which can be integrated into existing and new PHP server-side projects. Developers need to have a good understanding of how data can be provided from and delivered to the back-end application, through template rendering, form submission and API interaction. They need to be able to use composition and inheritance to implement an effective, efficient templating strategy.

Valuable experience of using JS, and JQuery where appropriate, is essential to any of our front-end work. The developer should be able to manipulate the DOM to provide an exceptional user experience and use application logic to interact with the back end application on-page.

We use BEM to create a flexible yet standardised UI framework.

Salary + Benefits

This role is a full time permanent role at 38 hours per week, Monday to Friday, the starting salary for this role is £45,000 per annum, and the candidate must be UK based.

In addition to the ability to remote work, we also offer the following and much more:

  • 29 days holiday per year plus public holidays
  • 2 ride days + 2 volunteering days per year
  • Life insurance and wellbeing package from YuLife*
  • Zero commission Bikmo insurance for you and your bikes*

*All subject to eligibility criteria.

As with most of the world, we are currently working 100% remotely. During lockdown we will work closely with you over video calls, screen shares, and Slack to get you into the systems and up to speed on our projects as well as developing a good understanding of our existing systems, our roadmap, and our working expectations.

When applying, please provide a short cover letter to support your application.
